Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner in history, is set to participate in the Sydney Marathon, marking its inaugural year as a World Major event. A two-time Olympic gold medallist and former world record holder, Kipchoge has already triumphed in four of the seven major marathons, including five wins in Berlin and four in London. His latest challenge will see him glide across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge on August 31.

The Sydney Marathon anticipates a record turnout, expecting 35,000 participants compared to 25,000 from the previous year, and hopes to attract around 300,000 spectators, up from an estimated 150,000 in 2024. Kipchoge, keen to experience the local culture, expressed excitement about exploring Sydney and its surroundings, especially the kangaroo, which he describes as a unique Australian icon.

“My visit to Australia represents a massive opportunity for me,” he stated. Kipchoge aims to promote the idea of running as a universal pursuit, emphasising that “a running nation is a beautiful nation.” His mantra, “no human is limited,” underlines his commitment to inspiring others to embrace running for their well-being.

Kipchoge has not competed since the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he withdrew due to back pain. However, he plans to race in the London Marathon next month before focusing on the Sydney event. As he prepares for this new challenge, Kipchoge is determined to not only aim for victory but also to share his running philosophy with the Australian public.

Sydney Marathon officials have worked diligently to secure Kipchoge’s participation, believing that his presence will leave a significant impact on the local running community. The anticipation builds as Australians eagerly await the chance to witness the legendary marathoner in action while engaging with his mission of making the world a running-friendly place.
