The jury has reached a verdict in the murder trial of Erin Patterson, with the announcement expected soon. Throughout the trial, over 50 witnesses were called by the prosecution, after which Patterson herself testified for eight days.
Following the testimonies, both the prosecution and defence presented their closing arguments over a week. Justice Christopher Beale then provided guidance to the jury, emphasising that they must determine if the prosecution had established beyond reasonable doubt that Patterson intentionally served poisonous death caps to her guests with the intention to kill.
Justice Beale also reminded the jurors that if they harboured any doubts regarding Patterson’s guilt, they were obligated to acquit her. Patterson has maintained her innocence, claiming the events were accidental, and has pleaded not guilty to three murder charges and one charge of attempted murder.
During their deliberations, the jury has been sequestered, remaining together until they can reach unanimous verdicts on all counts. Justice Beale stressed that all jurors must agree on the verdict, although their individual reasoning can differ.
