A man has been found guilty of murder following a fatal stabbing incident in a suburban park in Victoria. Malwal Aweng, 28, was convicted today by a jury after admitting to the killing of 32-year-old Mayiik Ring on December 30, 2022, yet he contended that he did not intend to kill or inflict serious injury.

Aweng had offered to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, but the prosecution pursued a murder trial. The altercation escalated when Aweng and Ring’s girlfriend became involved in an argument at a reserve in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Ring intervened as the situation grew violent, but Aweng pulled a knife from his girlfriend’s bag, injuring her before stabbing Ring in the abdomen.

Though Ring managed to remain on his feet briefly, he later collapsed near a community centre and succumbed to his injuries after attempts by paramedics to revive him failed. Aweng appeared shocked and emotional upon hearing the verdict, with one juror visibly tearful as well.

Aweng is scheduled to undergo a pre-sentence hearing at an undecided future date.
