A federal judge has admonished attorney Mark Geragos, representing music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, for disparaging comments about prosecutors during a podcast as the rapper’s sex trafficking trial begins. Judge Arun Subramanian described Geragos’ characterization of the prosecution team as a “six-pack of white women” as “outrageous,” indicating that such remarks undermine the decorum expected in court.

During discussions on Tuesday, the judge stressed the importance of adhering to local guidelines concerning public statements about ongoing cases. He expressed concern about Geragos’ comments, which could negatively influence public perception and the trial’s integrity. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking, following his arrest in September. He remains in custody without bail.

Judge Subramanian is in the process of finalising jury selection, with opening statements anticipated for Monday. Prosecutors are urging the judge to ensure that Geragos, despite his significant legal background and experience, refrains from making inflammatory remarks that could jeopardise a fair trial. Geragos has indicated that he maintains close communication with Combs, although he claims his official representation is limited to Combs’ mother.

The trial arises from allegations that Combs exploited his status and wealth to coerce young women into vulnerable sexual situations, including drug-fuelled parties where women were allegedly made to engage in sexual acts against their will, while being filmed. Combs’ legal team has countered these claims by arguing that the prosecution is mischaracterising consensual activities.

As the jury selection process progresses, Combs has been observed closely monitoring proceedings, with both legal teams expected to exercise their rights to eliminate potential jurors. This procedure aims to assemble a fair and impartial jury.

The atmosphere surrounding the trial has been charged, with Combs’ lawyers arguing that unfounded allegations and excessive media attention could irreparably harm their client’s chances of a fair hearing. They contend that Combs has been subjected to a media frenzy that has reached an absurd level, influenced by his celebrity status.

As Judge Subramanian concluded discussions, he acknowledged the importance of ensuring fair trial conditions, highlighting the responsibility of those involved in the legal process to act with integrity. With jury selection set to be finalised soon, all eyes will be on how the trial unfolds in this high-profile case.
