Australia secured a dominant victory against the West Indies in the first Test by 159 runs, highlighted by an impressive bowling performance from Josh Hazlewood on the third day in Barbados. Chasing a target of 301 runs, the West Indies began their innings poorly, losing captain Kraigg Brathwaite to Mitchell Starc in the very first over.
Hazlewood then took centre stage, wreaking havoc with a stunning spell that saw him claim four wickets for just four runs in three overs, rapidly shifting the momentum in favour of the Australians. Pat Cummins contributed by bowling out Shai Hope with a low delivery that barely rose off the ground, while Marnus Labuschagne, serving as 12th man, made his mark with a brilliant direct hit to run out Alzarri Joseph.
Despite the home side’s struggles, Shamar Joseph momentarily entertained the crowd, striking five boundaries off Starc and Hazlewood, including two sixes that cleared the boundary with ease. He proceeded to launch Nathan Lyon for big runs too, before falling for 44 runs when he attempted another ambitious shot and was caught at slip.
Looking to defend the tail, Jayden Seales faced a mere three balls but unfortunately for him, a single delivery was all that was needed for Australia to seal the victory, as he was caught at bat-pad.
With this victory, Australia made a strong impression in the Test series, characterised by outstanding bowling and key contributions from their players.
