Jorge Costa, the former Porto captain who led the club to victory in the 2004 Champions League, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 53 from cardiac arrest, as confirmed by the club. At the time of his death, Costa was serving as Porto’s director of football, having previously made 50 appearances for the Portuguese national team.

In a statement, FC Porto described Costa as a representation of the club’s core values: leadership, dedication, passion, and an indomitable will to win. Reports indicated that his cardiac arrest occurred at the club’s training centre, leading to his immediate transport to São João Hospital.

Costa’s most notable achievement during his playing career was captaining the team under José Mourinho in their unexpected Champions League triumph in 2004, a year after lifting the UEFA Cup, alongside securing eight league titles in Portugal.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro extended his sympathies, recognising Costa’s commitment to both Porto and the national squad. Mourinho, emotional during a press conference ahead of a Champions League match, shared, “Your legacy will stay with us,” reflecting on Costa’s profound impact. He recalled Costa’s spirit, encouraging him to carry on despite his grief: “Mister, stop crying, tomorrow you have a match and your boys need you ready and strong.”

Winning 24 titles, including the Champions League and UEFA Cup, defined Costa’s illustrious career, which concluded in 2005. His fellow teammate, Deco, labelled him a “legendary captain,” expressing sorrow over his passing and acknowledging Costa’s significance to Portuguese football and FC Porto.

Deco reminisced about Costa’s embodiment of Porto’s spirit and determination, vowing to keep his memory alive. Former teammate Pepe also extended condolences, highlighting Costa’s dedication and enduring legacy within the club’s history.

Costa had a brief loan spell at Charlton Athletic during the 2001-02 season, where he was well respected. Steve Brown, chair of Charlton’s ex-players’ association, paid tribute, noting Costa’s standing in the sport and his admirable nature, saying, “He was well-loved at Charlton, a formidable player, and a great guy.”

Costa’s untimely passing at 53 has left a significant void in the world of football, with many reflecting fondly on his contributions both on and off the pitch. His legacy as a passionate leader and a skilled player will be remembered by fans and former teammates alike.
