Brisbane Broncos player Jordan Riki is set to face a two-match suspension due to a high tackle on Jack Bostock during the recent match against the Dolphins. The incident, which occurred just before half-time, saw Riki placed on report and subsequently charged with a grade two careless high tackle. If he chooses to contest the charge but is unsuccessful at the judiciary, he would then face an additional match suspension, bringing his total to three games.
In commentary, former player Andrew Johns explained that the tackle was a result of Bostock being propelled into Riki by Adam Reynolds’ earlier low tackle. Although Riki was reported for the incident, he was not sent to the sin bin at the time. Bostock, after receiving a head injury assessment, returned to the field before the second half.
Additionally, from the same match, his teammate Tom Gilbert is facing a one-match ban for a similar high tackle on Kotoni Staggs. Gilbert received a charge similar to Riki’s but has been awarded a lighter penalty because it is his first offence.
This situation adds further scrutiny as the Broncos navigate the ongoing season amid controversy surrounding officiating, including a recent call that drew criticism for cancelling races at Rosehill. As Riki contemplates his course of action, the implications of these rulings could be significant for both him and the team.
