Johnathan Thurston has expressed his surprise regarding the St George Illawarra Dragons’ decision to extend coach Shane Flanagan’s contract. Flanagan, who still had a year left on his existing deal, signed a new two-year contract, securing his position until 2028. This news follows a period of significant changes for the club, which has also appointed Tim Watsford as the new chief executive and Daniel Anderson to lead recruitment.

While this contract extension aims to provide stability as the Dragons strive to return to finals contention and attract high-profile players, it raises concerns about potential consequences for the club. Notably, the move could hinder Dean Young, a well-regarded former player and current assistant coach, from stepping into a head coach role. Young has an existing contract until 2027 but possesses a clause allowing him to leave if a head coaching opportunity arises elsewhere.

During a discussion on Nine’s Wide World of Sports, Thurston remarked on the implications of Flanagan’s re-signing, highlighting Young’s aspirations for a head coaching position and his status as a club legend. He described the board’s decision as “interesting,” considering Young’s credentials and local standing.

Young, who has previously been overlooked for the head coaching role when Anthony Griffin was appointed, has built a solid reputation during his second tenure with the Dragons, including a successful stint at the North Queensland Cowboys. Despite not being currently linked with any other NRL teams, Young could find himself in contention for a coaching role if one opens up in the upcoming offseason. His positive rapport with veteran coach Wayne Bennett, who has often praised Young’s abilities, positions him favourably within the rugby league landscape.

As for the Dragons’ performance, they have experienced an inconsistent season, with recent victories against the Raiders and Sharks falling short of securing a finals spot. Thurston noted that close losses earlier in the year may weigh heavily on Flanagan’s mind as he reflects on missed opportunities. He acknowledged that the recent quality of play would leave fans wondering why the team hadn’t performed at that level throughout the season, a sentiment that resonates with Dragons supporters as they seek improvement in the future.
