A former Jewish-owned building supply store in Melbourne, Gottlieb’s, has been vandalised with antisemitic graffiti, prompting a police investigation. The store, located on Dandenong Road in Malvern East, recently closed and was known for its strong ties to the local Jewish community, being founded by Holocaust survivors.

The offensive graffiti, which included swastikas and the phrase “gas the Jews,” was discovered over the weekend, leaving a heavy mark on the legacy of the family who established the business. Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia, expressed shock and sorrow over the defacement, highlighting the family’s contributions and their gratitude towards Australia for providing refuge after the Holocaust. He remarked on the persistence of antisemitism, stating that it is now overtly displayed in public spaces.

Leibler questioned Australia’s safety as a haven for those escaping hatred in light of these events and stressed the importance of not remaining silent in the face of such hate. Victoria Police are actively investigating this incident and have urged witnesses to come forward. A representative from the police reiterated that there is no tolerance for antisemitic behaviour or symbols within Australian society.
