Parramatta coach Jason Ryles has come to the defence of Dylan Brown following a series of boos directed at the playmaker from Eels fans before their match against the Wests Tigers. This negative reaction came after Brown’s recent announcement to join the Newcastle Knights at the end of the current season on a lucrative 10-year deal, rumoured to be worth up to $14 million.

During the pre-game festivities at CommBank Stadium, as the team lineup was revealed, the spotlight fell on the Kiwi international when his image was displayed on the big screen. This prompted a chorus of discontent from the crowd, leading to questions about the player’s reception after a disappointing 32-6 loss to the Tigers.

In response to these events, Ryles noted, “Was there [booing]? I can’t hear it up there; it’s pretty soundproof.” He acknowledged the emotional investment of the fans, asserting, “That’s just footy. They’re passionate, and that might reflect how they feel, but it doesn’t alter our perspective of him.”

Despite the team’s struggles, Ryles refrained from placing blame on Brown, stating that the player was improving from his previous performance. Ryles remarked, “He was steady. He’s improved on last week. We’re still working on some things with Dylan and his game… He needs some support around him to truly thrive.”

In contrast, the Tigers displayed strong synergy between their halves, Jarome Luai and Lachlan Galvin, leading to their first win of the season. Meanwhile, Brown and his partner, trialist Ronald Volkman, found it challenging to make a significant impact.

Following the defeat, Ryles expressed his disappointment but also recognised positive signs in individual performances. He reflected on the need to strengthen their edge defence and improve focus, stating, “My initial emotions are very disappointed,” while also noting, “some parts of the game we’re working on.”

This loss, combined with a heavy 56-18 defeat to the Storm in Round 1, has cast a shadow over Ryles’ first season as head coach in the NRL, leaving room for improvement as the season progresses.

In summary, while the booing of Dylan Brown by Eels fans highlighted a rough patch for both the player and the club, Ryles’ commitment to supporting his star player during this difficult time remains evident, underscoring the challenges ahead for Parramatta as they navigate the rest of the season.
