Superstar jockey James McDonald experienced disappointment in a thrilling conclusion to the Saudi Cup, with Forever Young fending off his mount, Romantic Warrior, to clinch the title on Sunday (AEDT). The prestigious race, the richest in the world worth $31.5 million AUD, was decided in the dying moments as Forever Young surged ahead.
McDonald, who believed he had the race secure, praised the tenacity of the Japanese three-year-old. This race marked the first defeat for Romantic Warrior since the Turnbull Stakes in 2023 during his stint in Australia.
“I’m incredibly proud of him, he’s a great horse. I’m gutted he’s been defeated, but he was gallant in defeat,” McDonald reflected after the race. He noted that the race unfolded ideally for his horse, who handled the dirt track well and maintained steady progression throughout.
Despite the loss, Romantic Warrior, hailed as the world’s top-rated horse, showcased impressive form leading up to the event in Riyadh, demonstrating his skill and resilience even in defeat.
