Jahrome Hughes has committed to a significant four-year contract extension with the Melbourne Storm, reported to be worth $4 million, choosing to remain with the club until 2030 despite tempting offers from new NRL teams like the Perth Bears and a Papua New Guinea franchise. At 30, Hughes, the reigning Dally M Player of the Year, is considered one of the league’s top playmakers, and it is believed he could have commanded annual salaries of around $1.5 million with a switch.

Previously contracted until 2026, Hughes’s new deal secures him at approximately $1 million per year, which is seen as a discount for the Storm. Expressing his happiness, Hughes stated, “I’m delighted to extend my contract… this club has become a second family to me, and Melbourne feels like home.” He mentioned that the camaraderie among players, coaches, and staff is special and he is focused on achieving more success while wearing the Storm jersey.

Currently sidelined due to a dislocated shoulder, he is expected to recover in time for the finals. Hughes cited prioritising his family’s happiness over financial gain as a key factor in his decision. He noted, “You don’t want to be going somewhere for money and not enjoying your life.” As he and his wife anticipate the arrival of their child later this year, this played a significant role in his choice.

He also reflected on his aspirations in football, asserting that Melbourne offers a strong chance for premiership success, a dream he holds dear. Hughes has expressed gratitude, having already won a premiership and a Dally M medal, and his loyalty to the club was evident in his decision to remain. Since joining the Storm in 2017, he has made 165 appearances and scored 68 tries, having previously played for the Cowboys and Titans.
