The Queensland government has enacted a significant new law enabling police to search individuals for knives in public spaces across the entire state. This legislation, known as Jack’s Law, is named in memory of 17-year-old Jack Beasley, who was fatally stabbed in December 2019 during a confrontation involving multiple teenagers at Surfers Paradise. Initially, the law was restricted to specific areas like train stations and shopping centres, but it has now been permanently expanded to cover all public locations.

The “Making Jack’s Law Permanent Bill” was successfully passed by the state parliament, reflecting a commitment to enhancing public safety. Since the introduction of handheld scanners, dubbed wands, in April 2023, police have conducted over 116,000 scans, resulting in the arrest of 3,080 individuals and the seizure of 1,126 weapons, including knives and machetes.

Jack’s parents, Brett and Belinda Beasley, have been steadfast advocates for this law since their son’s tragic death. They expressed their ongoing grief while also finding solace in knowing that Jack’s legacy is helping to prevent similar tragedies and protect other families. Brett Beasley commented on the dual significance of the law, stating that it represents not only a legislative victory but also a vital means of safeguarding the community.

The Queensland Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Dan Purdie, underscored the law’s effectiveness, describing it as a crucial deterrent in modern policing. He emphasised that Jack Beasley’s legacy will continue to profoundly impact the lives of Queenslanders, contributing to safer streets for all.
