Jack Della Maddalena has etched his name into UFC history by becoming only the third Australian to win a championship title, triumphing over Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision for the welterweight belt. The 28-year-old from Perth entered the match as an underdog but delivered an impressive performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Montreal on Sunday (AEST).
Della Maddalena joins the elite ranks of Australians who have secured titles in the UFC, alongside Robert Whittaker and Alexander Volkanovski. As he made his entrance, AC/DC’s “TNT” pumped through the arena, setting the stage for an explosive contest against the seasoned champion.
The bout was fiercely contested, with the initial three rounds showcasing Della Maddalena’s defensive prowess as he successfully thwarted multiple takedown attempts while causing visible damage to Muhammad. As the fight progressed into the championship rounds, both fighters exchanged blows, with Della Maddalena landing a devastating knee strike in the final round, further slicing Muhammad and maintaining the pressure.
After a tense wait for the judges’ decision, the scores were announced as 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46, favouring Della Maddalena. Elated with his victory, he expressed his feelings, stating, “This feels exactly how I thought it would – it feels f—–g good.”
Looking ahead, Della Maddalena may face a title defence against Islam Makhachev, who is reportedly considering a move to welterweight. Makhachev, having previously defeated Volkanovski, looms large as a challenging opponent, but Della Maddalena remains resolute, declaring, “It’s a beautiful challenge … I’m gonna get it back for Volk.”
In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko retained her women’s flyweight title against Manon Fiorot, winning by unanimous decision. Earlier in the night, veteran fighter Jose Aldo faced a heart-wrenching loss to Aiemann Zahabi, leading him to announce his retirement from the sport, believing he no longer had the drive to continue competing. “I just don’t have it in my heart anymore. I think this is the last time you will see me,” Aldo conveyed to the audience, marking the end of his illustrious career.
Della Maddalena’s victory not only cements his status in the sport but also adds to Australia’s legacy in mixed martial arts, igniting anticipation for his future bouts and potential title defences.
