While Michael Maguire acknowledges that Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt aren’t the youngest halves pairing in the NRL, he firmly believes in their capabilities. With a combined total of 621 NRL appearances and ages adding up to 68, this duo is set to become the oldest halves pairing since Des Hasler and Cliff Lyons in 1996.
Until Ezra Mam’s return from a nine-game suspension, Reynolds and Hunt will coordinate strategies for the Broncos. Despite Reynolds needing time for injury rehabilitation, the pair has swiftly developed a notable synergy, impressing Maguire. “They’ve been really good,” he stated during an appearance on Nine’s Today. He noted that while their partnership only solidified in the past month, their extensive experience is already evident.
Hunt, who has previously captained the Dragons for four years, is joining Reynolds in a crucial leadership role for the Broncos, contributing to a senior leadership team that Maguire believes will significantly enhance team performance. He remarked that having two experienced players is like having "two coaches on the field," allowing them to guide the team’s strategies effectively.
Maguire commended their relationship and its beneficial impact, saying that as the pair spends more time together, their collaboration will become increasingly fruitful. He echoed Reynolds’ sentiments about managing expectations and not getting caught up in pre-season hype. “The boys have put in the work, just like everyone else has in pre-season,” Maguire said, emphasising the importance of solid preparation for the upcoming challenges and the anticipated strong connections among players.
The Broncos are gearing up for their season opener against the Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Thursday. Maguire expressed optimism, confident that the team is ready to put their strategies into action.
