Australian boxing icon Jeff Fenech has paid tribute to George Foreman, acknowledging him as “the biggest puncher in history” following the announcement of Foreman’s passing at the age of 76. Since the news broke on social media, tributes from sports figures have poured in, highlighting Foreman’s impact on both boxing and beyond.

Fenech reflected fondly on the time he spent with Foreman at World Boxing Council conventions, describing him as “an amazing human being” and a “total gentleman” despite his imposing stature. He praised Foreman not only for his prowess in the ring, where he was known for his remarkable knockout power, but also for his warm character. “He was just this funny guy who loved everybody,” Fenech remarked.

Throughout his illustrious 28-year career, Foreman’s only knockout loss came at the hands of Muhammad Ali during the legendary ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in 1974. Fenech pointed out that Foreman likely entered that match believing he would dominate, yet it became one of the most celebrated bouts in boxing history.

Following his retirement, Foreman embraced a new life as an ordained minister and devoted preacher. However, he remains widely recognised for the immensely popular George Foreman Grill, launched in 1994—the same year he reclaimed the heavyweight title from Michael Moorer. Fenech humorously noted that Foreman likely earned more from the grill than from boxing, attributing it to his love for food.

The boxing community has expressed profound grief over the loss of not just a remarkable athlete, but a genuine and kind-hearted individual. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who never fought Foreman, shared photographs of the two, stating that Foreman’s contributions to boxing would always be remembered. Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council, praised him as a “legendary boxing champion” and a deeply loved family man, affirming that his legacy would endure.

Basketball legend Charles Barkley expressed his sorrow, recalling his interactions with Foreman and the insights he gained from him about entrepreneurship after sports. Barkley described the pain of Foreman’s passing as hitting him unexpectedly, offering his condolences to the Foreman family.

As the sporting world mourns, it becomes clear that George Foreman will be remembered not only for his formidable skills in the ring but also for the warmth he extended to others throughout his life.
