South Sydney’s injury woes have deepened following the exit of Keaon Koloamatangi during their defeat to Penrith. The Rabbitohs prop suffered an ankle injury and was forced off the field in the 53rd minute, unable to continue. Commentator Mat Thompson referred to the team’s misfortunes as a “curse.”
Koloamatangi’s mishap occurred when he awkwardly fell out of contact while trying to rejoin the play. Renowned rugby commentator Andrew Johns commented on the unfortunate situation, expressing his dismay at the injury.
Adding to the Rabbitohs’ troubles, Peter Mamouzelos also had to leave the field shortly after for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), which he did not pass. The club is already grappling with a significant injury crisis, with several key players, including Brandon Smith, Latrell Mitchell, Campbell Graham, and Cody Walker, among others, sidelined.
After the match, coach Wayne Bennett was uncertain about the extent of Koloamatangi’s injury but acknowledged the ongoing struggles the team faced. Jack Wighton shared the sentiment that every injury adds to their challenges, stating they are “backs against the wall” but remain committed to persisting through the hardship.
Despite entering the match as heavy favourites without key players Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo, the Panthers initially struggled. They managed to secure an early lead, with Paul Alamoti scoring the first try, followed by Dylan Edwards, and Casey McLean extending the score to 18-0 before halftime.
In the first half, Wighton found himself under scrutiny for a high tackle, which was noted by officials. However, the Rabbitohs showed resilience after halftime, scoring through Liam Le Blanc. Nevertheless, the Panthers regained momentum, with Edwards and McLean each scoring twice, leading to a final score of 30-10, with Alex Johnston adding a late try for South Sydney.
The increasing injury toll leaves the Rabbitohs facing significant challenges as they navigate the remainder of the season.
