The SailGP fleet made a dramatic entrance to Australia with Team USA’s F50 capsizing before the iconic Sydney Opera House on Friday, leading to their exclusion from the race weekend due to critical damage. The incident resulted from a last-minute tow miscalculation amidst technical difficulties, compounded by a sudden wind gust that flipped the vessel onto its sail.

Besides Team USA’s setback, Friday’s practice races saw Germany involved in two collisions that drew significant penalties. As a result, Germany suffered a 32-point reduction for the event and 20 from their season total, while the USA lost 12 event points and Brazil lost 8. This marked the highest penalty points ever given at a SailGP grand prix before racing had officially begun.

On Saturday, the remaining fleet faced tough racing conditions. Australia’s team, led by Tom Slingsby, excelled, securing two victories and topping the leaderboard with 37 points. The competition was fierce, with various near-misses and dramatic manoeuvres showcasing the challenges of crowded racing.

New Zealand had a particularly challenging day, finishing in the lower ranks due to multiple errors and equipment issues. Looking ahead to Sunday, three fleet races are planned, with the potential for an exhilarating showdown if conditions permit. Slingsby remains cautious, noting the unpredictability of the wind in Sydney.
