Phil Waugh, the chief executive of Rugby Australia, has firmly stated that former Wallaby Israel Folau will not be considered for selection to face the British and Irish Lions this year. Folau expressed his desire to join the AUNZ Invitational XV for the match scheduled on July 12 at Adelaide Oval. However, Waugh clarified that Folau’s eligibility rules prevent him from being selected.
Waugh explained that the AUNZ team will consist exclusively of players eligible to represent Australia and New Zealand. He emphasised that once a player is deemed ineligible for Australia, it impacts their chances of being chosen for any representative match. In reference to the national teams, Waugh highlighted that players must be members of Australian Super Rugby squads. Additionally, in instances where teams may require more strength or competitiveness, Rugby Australia may look to talented players from clubs such as Moana Pasifika and the Fijian Drua.
Furthermore, Rugby Australia made it clear that they would not pursue any special exemptions to accommodate Folau’s potential return, reinforcing their stance on the existing eligibility rules.
