In an outstanding return from injury, Isaac Heeney showcased his prowess on the field, leading the Sydney Swans to a dominant 24.19 (163) to 4.11 (35) victory over the West Coast Eagles. Heeney, who hadn’t played since round one due to a hamstring injury, quickly made a mark, and in doing so, emerged as a potential contender for mark of the year alongside Maurice Rioli, who earlier made headlines for his impressive display.

During the match, Heeney executed a breathtaking leap onto young Eagles player Harley Reid, which left commentators speechless. The 29-year-old had a memorable day, securing 18 disposals and two goals by halftime, and finishing with a total of four goals and 26 disposals, firmly establishing himself as the standout performer on the ground.

Jack Riewoldt, a Richmond legend, remarked that Heeney was far superior to any other player, while David King echoed this sentiment, praising Heeney’s performance. Meanwhile, Reid faced a challenging match, with commentators criticising several of his decisions, including conceding a 50m penalty to the Swans. Tensions escalated for Reid later in the game as he engaged in a heated exchange with Swans player Angus Sheldrick, who had elbowed a teammate.

Despite the criticism, Reid managed to record 17 disposals, though he struggled with his impact on the game, notably missing tackles and marks. Opinions on Reid shifted after reviewing his incidents, with experts emphasising the need for emotional control as he develops in his career.

Swans coach Dean Cox opted to rest Heeney late in the game after his stellar performance, while new addition Charlie Curnow also impressed, scoring four goals. Looking ahead, the Swans will next face the Gold Coast Suns on April 11, promising another exciting chapter in their season.
