Former Wallabies captain Will Skelton has expressed strong support for Ronan O’Gara as a potential successor to Joe Schmidt as Australia’s head coach. O’Gara, a legendary Irish fly-half and the sixth highest Test points scorer, has successfully transitioned to coaching, leading La Rochelle to two European titles after prior roles with Racing 92 and the Crusaders.
Skelton highlighted O’Gara’s meticulous coaching style, noting that he shares a similar attention to detail with Schmidt. Skelton believes O’Gara would excel in harnessing the talents of formidable players like Bobby Valetini and Taniela Tupou. He also confirmed his availability to play for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions, despite balancing club commitments.
In contrast, NSW Waratahs coach Dan McKellar has downplayed speculation regarding the Wallabies coaching position, confirming he has not been informed about any offers. McKellar expressed surprise at Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss’s statements about the position, insisting he is focused solely on his responsibilities with the Waratahs. Meanwhile, he reassured reporters about player Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s fitness, stating he was merely being rested.
