French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to support Lebanon amidst the ongoing conflict involving Israel. In a recent communication through the social platform X, Macron shared details of his conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
During these discussions, Macron expressed France’s strong solidarity with Lebanon, condemning the “indiscriminate strikes” by Israel that have caused significant civilian casualties. He underscored the severity of the situation, stating that such attacks threaten the fragile ceasefire recently established in the region, emphasising that Lebanon should be fully protected by this truce.
Macron also highlighted the importance of maintaining Lebanon’s territorial integrity and reaffirmed France’s commitment to assist the Lebanese government in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, which includes tackling the issue of Hezbollah’s disarmament.
In recent times, Macron has voiced his criticisms regarding military actions in the Middle East, notably regarding the responses from Israel and the United States. He countered US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Europe should consider a military reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, labelling it as impractical.
While Macron’s statement reinforces France’s diplomatic support for Lebanon, he did not specify the nature of the support that France intends to provide, suggesting that it is unlikely to involve military assistance.
