Fifteen new officers from diverse backgrounds have officially joined the South Australia Police (SAPOL), graduating from the academy today. Their unique experiences are seen as vital in addressing the ongoing workforce shortages in the state.

Jamie Earl, a recruit from the United Kingdom, shared his journey, stating he felt compelled to move to Australia when he learned about the recruitment efforts. Upon expressing his intention to his parents, they enthusiastically encouraged him to seize the opportunity, prompting a swift decision to make the move.

The graduates completed a rigorous 15-week transitional program and are set to begin their duties promptly. They will be deployed across various regions, including urban centres and places like Whyalla and Port Pirie, thereby strengthening police presence statewide.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens emphasised the importance of recruiting seasoned officers. He noted that many frontline positions are filled by relatively junior personnel, and having experienced officers enhances overall community support and policing effectiveness.

In a broader scheme to bolster its ranks, SAPOL is executing an international and interstate recruitment drive with the goal of attracting 200 additional experienced personnel. As part of this initiative, the force is offering to cover permanent residency visa costs for newly recruited officers and their immediate families.

Currently, there are 34 more recruits in training, anticipated to graduate by May next year. This ongoing recruitment reflects SAPOL’s commitment to strengthening its force and ensuring the safety and security of South Australian communities.
