A public health inquiry has been initiated to investigate whether harmful odours from the Swanbank and New Chum Industrial Estate in Ipswich, Queensland, are jeopardising the health of local residents. These unpleasant smells have plagued the area for some time, leading to significant concerns among the community. Over a six-month period, the inquiry will assess how these noxious fumes have affected the well-being of Ipswich inhabitants.
The inquiry will be led by Dr John Gerrard, a specialist physician and former chief health officer. Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding has expressed her support for the investigation, highlighting the long-standing health issues reported by residents, which they attribute to these odours. Among the health complaints are rashes, respiratory problems, migraines, chest pain, sore throats, and nausea.
The inquiry aims to bring clarity and potential resolutions to the ongoing discomfort faced by the community, as local residents seek answers regarding the health implications of their environment.
