A new mobile health initiative in Australia aims to significantly reduce lung cancer fatalities by promoting early detection of the disease. Launched by the Lung Foundation Australia in partnership with the federal government, the $267 million program seeks to address lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country. Mark Brooke, CEO of the Lung Foundation Australia, emphasised the program’s potential to save lives through effective screening.

At the recent Australian Lung Cancer conference, studies indicated that the initiative could save around 12,000 lives over the next decade. This programme features mobile clinics equipped with state-of-the-art, battery-powered CT scanners and advanced imaging technology, set to travel nationwide, particularly targeting remote areas to enhance early detection.

South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton highlighted that this approach will facilitate early identification and treatment of lung cancer, rather than managing advanced cases with limited options. Five screening trucks are expected to be operational across Australia within a year, with the inaugural truck scheduled to commence its journey in November. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the fight against lung cancer in Australia.
