As parliament reconvenes for the first time since the Albanese government’s second term election victory in May, urgent childcare reform and fulfilling key election commitments are at the forefront of the agenda. Ahead of the opening of the 48th parliament, Members of Parliament (MPs) from various parties gathered at the residence of the governor-general, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his congratulations to both new governing and opposition representatives.

In a display of camaraderie amidst political divides, Deputy Opposition Leader Ted O’Brien emphasised that shared values unite the parliamentarians, despite their differences. Outside the parliament building, protesters demonstrated in support of Palestine, but inside, discussions are set to focus on national concerns.

A primary item on the agenda includes the government’s promise of a one-off 20 per cent reduction in student HECS debt. Although the opposition previously opposed this measure, they appear more inclined to support it now, with opposition education spokesman Jonathon Duniam stating their intent not to obstruct initiatives aimed at easing cost of living pressures.

Childcare reform has also escalated in importance, particularly following alarming reports of child abuse within childcare facilities. The government plans to introduce new legislation aimed at withdrawing funding from centres failing to meet quality standards. Attorney-General Michelle Rowland emphasised the urgent need for decisive action in this area.

Additionally, there will be upcoming meetings among state and territory attorneys-general to address further reforms, which may include changes to Working With Children Checks, the implementation of CCTV in childcare centres, and the introduction of real-time reporting requirements. Duniam noted that parents need assurance about the safety of their children while in the care of unfamiliar individuals.

In a significant shift, the Coalition appears to be moderating its stance on several policy issues, recognising the overwhelming rejection of their previous election platform by the electorate. This shift may pave the way for increased collaboration in this parliamentary term, suggesting a potential easing of partisan tensions.
