Tony Mestrov, the CEO of the Manly Sea Eagles, recently addressed growing speculation regarding Michael Ennis as a potential future coach and provided clarity on Anthony Seibold’s situation. Despite having pre-season aspirations, the team is currently languishing in 10th place on the ladder. Reports surfaced suggesting that Seibold was under pressure, needing to win at least two upcoming matches to secure his position, prompting Mestrov’s comments.
However, speaking to Nine’s Danny Weidler, Mestrov expressed unequivocal support for Seibold, stating, “I’m 100 per cent behind him,” and acknowledged that his initial remarks might have been misleading. He emphasised that Seibold’s position isn’t under immediate threat, assuring, “He’s safe, I’ve got his back.” Nonetheless, Mestrov did admit there is considerable pressure on the coaching staff to improve the team’s performance, saying, “We all have to win games.”
Mestrov also dismissed claims that Seibold only has two games left to save his job. Amidst this turmoil, there are also rumours suggesting Ennis, currently regarded as a potential coaching candidate, may take over as coach in 2027, with Seibold possibly transitioning to a football management role. Mestrov refuted these claims, clarifying that while discussions have occurred in the past, “there’s nothing formally in place.”
For now, Mestrov remains focused on supporting Seibold while hoping the team will turn their dismal season around.
