Jonah Pezet, the halfback for the Rising Storm, has avoided comment on speculation linking him to a potential swap deal for the upcoming season, especially in light of Melbourne securing Jahrome Hughes’ re-signing. The 22-year-old had previously signed a contract that would see him with the Storm until 2029, but it includes a clause related to Hughes’ status, and with Hughes’ recent extension, Pezet’s position remains precarious.

Rumours suggest that the Storm may loan Pezet to another NRL club, similar to the arrangement they made with Harry Grant when he was in a backup role behind Cameron Smith. This could allow Pezet to gain valuable experience should Cameron Munster choose to depart the club. Pezet, regarded as a promising successor to either Munster or Hughes, has currently made three appearances off the bench following his recovery from an ACL injury.

Pezet’s agent, Braith Anasta, hinted at the possibility of a club move, but Pezet himself is concentrating on his performance on the field. He stated, “I think I’ll leave that up to Braith and the club’s staff to sort out… I’m just focused on putting my best foot forward every week.” He added that his goal is to ensure he is selected in the matchday squad regularly.

The emergence of a loan for Pezet would continue a trend of the Storm utilising rival teams for player development, similar to past strategies. The Knights have reportedly opted out of pursuing Pezet, while the Dragons could provide an avenue for his loan.

Pezet expressed his desire to compete at the highest level, acknowledging the current opportunity presented by Hughes’ injury and reiterating his commitment to preparing himself for any chance that arises. As he prepares to feature again as a bench player in the upcoming match against the Broncos, Pezet remains focused on his performance, hoping that his hard work will lead to more consistent game time in the NRL.
