Former F1 driver and commentator Martin Brundle recently shared a positive piece about Oscar Piastri’s performance after the Australian faced backlash for Brundle’s commentary during the rain-lashed Belgian Grand Prix, where Piastri emerged victorious, further extending his championship lead over his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris.
Piastri, who started the race in second place, made his move on the slippery track right after the race resumed post-safety car, bypassing Norris within the first lap. Demonstrating impressive tyre management as the track dried, Piastri maintained his lead as Norris struggled with mistakes and a slow pit stop that ultimately left him trailing by over three seconds.
Despite Piastri’s achievement, fans expressed frustration towards the broadcast, which seemed to favour Norris, overlooking some pivotal errors that cost him the race. In response to this criticism, Brundle took to the Sky Sports website, commending Piastri’s “champion’s drive” and comparing his performance to legendary drivers such as Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
Brundle noted that Piastri’s ability to adapt and perform under challenging conditions was indicative of a high-caliber driver, praising his strategic thinking during the race. He remarked on the clever tyre strategy that allowed Norris to remain in contention, while acknowledging that Piastri’s calmness and skill under pressure were key to his victory.
Piastri now holds a significant edge in the drivers’ standings, boasting six wins this season, while Norris finds himself 16 points behind. The 24-year-old expressed his satisfaction at returning to the top step of the podium, having last won at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
The upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix presents yet another opportunity for these two teammates to showcase their skills as they vie for supremacy on the track.
