Braith Anasta, the television host and player agent for Lachlan Ilias, expressed concerns that Ilias is “losing hope” of making a return to the NRL this season, amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding Kyle Flanagan’s role as the starting halfback for the St George Illawarra Dragons. Coach Shane Flanagan has faced intense scrutiny for maintaining his son, Kyle, in the critical No.7 position, especially as the Dragons are on a four-match losing streak and are likely to miss the finals again.

Despite this poor form, Dragons’ NSW Cup team has been performing admirably, winning 10 out of their last 12 games, spearheaded by Ilias and Jonah Glover. Ilias, who has been relegated to the NSW Cup after Round 8 due to a loss to the Roosters, has showcased strong performances in the lower tier, leading to calls for him to reclaim his position in the NRL. However, Coach Flanagan has remained steadfast in his choice to support his son and Lyhkan King Togia for the halfback roles.

Anasta, speaking on Fox Sports, broke his silence on the situation, insisting that Ilias has fulfilled all expectations during his time in the NSW Cup. He questioned the rationale behind Ilias’s continued absence from the first-grade team, raising concerns that the young player is becoming demoralised. Anasta emphasised the necessity of voicing his concerns for Ilias’ welfare, noting that he feels the frustration of both players in the NSW Cup who are being overlooked for the NRL.

Furthermore, the Dragons’ management has indicated a forthcoming shake-up in the squad, including the halves. The club recently appointed former NRL coach Daniel Anderson as head of recruitment, positioning him to oversee a roster overhaul. Dragons CEO Tim Watsford had earlier dismissed Flanagan’s prospects for next season, clarifying that he was initially signed as a utility and suggesting that significant changes to the playmaking structure are expected.

As the season progresses with dwindling hopes for a finals appearance, the pressure mounts on Flanagan and the coaching staff to reshape the team and address the halfback situation. The Dragons appear poised to make noteworthy adjustments as they look to rebuild for the next season while grappling with the current roster’s results.
