The search for a new head coach for the Melbourne Demons is already in motion, but caretaker coach Troy Chaplin has decided not to pursue the permanent position for the upcoming 2026 season. Chaplin, who took on the caretaker role following the dismissal of Simon Goodwin, made it clear that although he aspires to be a senior coach someday, the timing isn’t right for him to take the next step immediately.

At 39 years old, Chaplin has been with the Demons coaching staff since 2016 and expressed that his initial week as a caretaker coach has been a rewarding experience. He acknowledged, however, that it’s uncommon for interim coaches to transition into permanent roles, stating, “Anytime a caretaker coach takes over, very rarely do they become that senior coach.”

In a conversation with reporters, Chaplin informed the club of his decision not to enter the competition for the top job. He values his connection with the players and staff but believes he still has much to learn before taking on such a significant responsibility. He plans to use the remaining weeks of the season as an opportunity to enhance his skills and gain insights into being a senior coach.

Chaplin sees this interim position as a chance to further develop his coaching resume and said, “It’s a great opportunity for me… to drive the program for the next three weeks to get a feel of what it takes.” He clearly stated his love for the club and his desire to contribute positively, hoping to remain a part of the Demons’ future.

Reflecting on the differences he’s noted in his current role, he remarked on the increased frequency of meetings and the high volume of communication, adding, “I’ve really enjoyed this week, it has been fantastic.” His gratitude was evident, as he acknowledged the supportive messages he received from others in the league.

While the search for a permanent replacement continues, Chaplin remains focused on making the most of his caretaker stint, planning to utilise this experience to prepare for future coaching aspirations.
