Terrell May has expressed regret over a recent blunder during a live stream before the announcement of the NSW Blues squad, promising to “earn their trust” going forward. The Wests Tigers prop was a strong contender for a place in the State of Origin opening side but was ultimately left out by coach Laurie Daley.
Ahead of the official announcement, rumours circulated that May would not be selected, which sparked an unusual reaction online. During a Twitch stream, the 26-year-old made light of the situation, joking that his friend should “chuck the jersey in the bin” and even hinted at switching allegiances. This drew sharp criticism from former Blues coach Brad Fittler, who described May’s remarks as “pathetic” on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
In response to the backlash, Daley stated that May’s comments had no influence on his non-selection. Nevertheless, the Samoan international took to social media to apologise for his comments. “When the reports surfaced, I felt frustrated with the comments that followed. I shouldn’t have said that, and it’s on me,” May explained during a discussion with Nathan’s Lawns and Gardens. He added, “I was joking, but I shouldn’t assume people know my character.”
May voiced a wish to retract his comment but acknowledged that it was too late. “I have to live with it now, and I’ll keep working hard to rebuild that trust,” he stated.
Having previously been released by the Sydney Roosters under unclear circumstances, May has since made 64 appearances for the club since his debut in 2022. In the upcoming State of Origin opener, Max King will make his debut for the Blues, joining front-row teammates Payne Haas, Mitch Barnett, and Spencer Leniu.
