Tim Horan, a renowned figure in Australian rugby, believes that James O’Connor’s performance during the match between the Crusaders and Waratahs has solidified his chances of being selected for the Wallabies squad, led by Joe Schmidt, for the upcoming Lions tour. O’Connor made a notable impact after being substituted in the 50th minute, particularly during the closing stages when his involvement helped create a try for Tom Christie.

O’Connor’s clever play during a scrum from halfway marked an important moment in the match. Positioned as the third receiver, he executed a one-handed pass as he manoeuvred around Waratahs player Triston Reilly, setting up Sevu Reece on the wing, who then assisted in Christie’s try. Commenting on O’Connor’s performance, Morgan Turinui expressed that his actions put an emphatic seal on a well-deserved victory for the Crusaders.

Horan was particularly impressed by O’Connor’s decisive play, suggesting it might have swayed Schmidt’s decision in favour of O’Connor’s inclusion in the squad. “That was brilliant the way he got back into play,” Horan remarked, indicating that O’Connor showcased the ability and skill needed for international competition.

Post-match, O’Connor expressed his eagerness to don the Wallabies jersey again, sharing with Stan Sport’s Matt Burke that he has been working hard towards this opportunity. “I want it bad… I’m just putting my head down and working,” he said, optimistic about earning a spot in the upcoming tour.

The Crusaders’ 48-33 victory left the Waratahs with only a slim chance of making it into the top six. The match saw the Waratahs struggle, as they found themselves 19-0 down within the first 20 minutes. Despite Langi Gleeson scoring to rally the home crowd, the Crusaders maintained control, leading 31-7 at half-time, with tries from Johnny McNicholl, Braydon Ennor, Chay Fihaki, and Ioane Moananu.

While Gleeson managed to score twice after the break, the Crusaders’ Sevu Reece also added to their tally, deflating the Waratahs’ hopes. A late try from Triston Reilly, courtesy of a pinpoint kick from Joey Walton, added a final touch to the scoreline, but it was the Crusaders who ultimately triumphed, confirming O’Connor’s significant role in their success.
