Hayden Esparon, the program coordinator of Great Mates Meet in Slacks Creek since 2021, finds great fulfillment in leading a weekly men’s group. The group’s supportive nature was especially significant to him following his testicular cancer diagnosis in early 2023, which required him to take a break for treatment. At just 29, Hayden was astonished to face such a diagnosis, highlighting the common misconception that cancer primarily affects older individuals.
The men’s group offers a space for camaraderie, laughter, and peer support, addressing the isolation many men experience. Hayden engages with the members by facilitating conversations, encouraging them to share personal challenges, and fostering connections among them. He notes the importance of addressing stigma around men’s mental health and encourages younger members to participate, as older members often share valuable insights from their experiences.
Despite his role, Hayden benefitted from the group’s support during his recovery, receiving messages and gestures of encouragement from fellow members. He now embraces a unique perspective on men’s health issues, advocating for greater awareness and support. Through activities like fishing trips, Hayden believes maintaining hobbies and fostering connections are vital for men of all ages. He underscores the importance of looking out for one another in their communities, promoting a culture of mateship.
