Carlos Sainz recently shared his feelings about being replaced at Ferrari by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2024 season. Despite being the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race in 2023 and having recently undergone appendix surgery, Sainz learned about his exit just a month before the season began.
Initially, Sainz expressed anger upon receiving the news but quickly transformed that into understanding. He acknowledged the challenge of processing such a significant change, stating that while he felt resentment at first, time allowed him to adapt and accept the situation. He reflected on the inevitability of the decision, recognising Hamilton’s stature in the sport as a key factor for Ferrari’s choice.
Sainz believed it was clear from the start that he would be the one making way, especially after teammate Charles Leclerc had secured a long-term contract. He stated, “Charles has been the project of Ferrari… I arrived at Ferrari more as a substitute.”
Having won all four of his Grands Prix with Ferrari, Sainz concluded that he would proceed with his career, now ready to drive for Williams alongside Alex Albon in 2025. Pre-season testing will begin in Bahrain, leading to the season opener in Melbourne on March 16.
