Hotter Than Usual: What to Expect from Autumn Weather and the Risk of Bushfires

Australia has experienced an unusually hot summer, and as autumn begins, temperatures are expected to remain elevated. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), this autumn is anticipated to be warmer than average across all states and territories, with many regions facing one of the hottest autumns on record, potentially reaching the top 20 per cent of historical temperature observations.

Forecasts indicate that most of the country has at least a 50 per cent chance of recording above-average maximum temperatures this season, with nearly all areas predicted to experience warmer-than-normal conditions. In contrast, rainfall is expected to align more closely with historical averages. The BoM mentioned that while temperatures are set to rise, the overall rainfall should remain typical for the season.

However, climatic conditions will vary across different regions. Far North Queensland is expected to have a drier autumn, while parts of Western Australia’s Kimberley and Pilbara regions may see above-average rainfall. There continues to be potential for tropical cyclones and storms in the north, which could lead to sporadic heavy downpours.

While the peak bushfire season is largely over, some parts of Australia, particularly along the southern coast, remain at increased risk for fires due to ongoing dry conditions. The National Council for Fire and Emergency Services (AFAC) has indicated that fire danger levels will remain heightened in these regions. They noted that recent fires in Victoria and Western Australia are indicative of the continued risk, suggesting that the fire season may extend longer than usual this year.

Local authorities will be monitoring bushfire threats throughout the season and will initiate prescribed burning efforts to reduce risks for the future.

Overall, the autumn months in Australia are set to present a blend of warm temperatures, varying rainfall patterns, and persistent bushfire risks in certain areas, demanding vigilance from both local authorities and residents alike.
