A prolific burglar from the UK, Paul Howell, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison after being foiled by a clever home security measure reminiscent of a scene from “Home Alone.” The 56-year-old attempted a break-in at a Northumberland residence around 3 am in November last year but fell into a trap set by the homeowners—a bucket of water rigged to spill when a string was pulled. After the incident, the homeowners reviewed their CCTV footage and reported the attempted burglary to the police days later.

Howell was arrested shortly thereafter and faced charges of attempted burglary. Additionally, he was connected to two other burglary incidents where he unlawfully entered another property and made off with various stolen items, including jewellery and bicycles. Having pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court in December, Howell now faces significant imprisonment due to his repeated criminal activities.

Detective Constable Jon Mullen of Northumbria Police remarked on the invasive nature of burglary and how it can instil fear in victims, emphasising that Howell’s lengthy sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the impact on the community.
