Two men involved in a notorious crime have expressed remorse for their actions. During his trial at the Vevey District Court, Wardas described his motivation as a desperate attempt to alleviate his financial struggles through a misguided get-rich-quick scheme. He revealed, “As a result I decided to hide Charlie Chaplin’s body and solve my problems.”
Eugene, Chaplin’s son, shared that both men had reached out to his mother through letters, seeking forgiveness. He recounted how the wife of one of the graverobbers conveyed an apology, stating, “We’re so sorry.” In response, Eugene’s mother extended her compassion, replying, “Look, all is forgiven.”
As a consequence of their actions, the court handed down a significant sentence to Wardas. He received four and a half years of hard labour for orchestrating the grave robbery, while his accomplice, Ganev, was sentenced to 18 months, which was suspended.
