The council is exploring the potential for heritage listing of several significant LGBTQIA+ sites in Sydney. This includes the Trade Club Sydney, regarded as the city’s inaugural lesbian bar, located at 273 Crown Street in Surry Hills. Additionally, they are considering the former Taxi Club, situated at 40-42 Flinders Street in Darlinghurst, along with The Bookshop, a well-known bookstore catering to the LGBTQIA+ community at 207 Oxford Street, also in Darlinghurst.
Furthermore, the Mardi Gras parade route has received recognition for its cultural importance, as have several local landmarks, including the Darlinghurst Police Station and the iconic Stonewall Hotel. This initiative highlights the council’s commitment to preserving and acknowledging the rich history and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community in Sydney.
