Port Adelaide’s coach, Ken Hinkley, has called for improved performances from his key players following a disappointing loss to Essendon on Thursday night. Despite leading for much of the match, the Power faltered in the final quarter as the Bombers surged ahead, ultimately winning the game with a total of 17 scoring opportunities.
As he prepares to depart at the end of the season, Hinkley expressed his frustration towards captain Connor Rozee and other senior players for underwhelming performances. “Our stronger players didn’t meet expectations,” Hinkley commented, acknowledging that while players may experience off games, the collective downturn was concerning. Rozee, who has shown great form throughout the season, still managed 22 disposals but only registered three score involvements due to tight tagging from Essendon’s Sam Durham.
Former club player Kane Cornes also critiqued the performance of young midfielder Jason Horne-Francis, who tallied 22 disposals and scored a late goal. Cornes noted a lack of positive body language from Horne-Francis, insinuating that this could reflect poorly on the wider team dynamic. “He needs to improve in how he carries himself during tough moments. His negative gestures can affect the entire group,” Cornes remarked.
Currently, Port Adelaide is sitting at a 1-2 record in the season, having suffered a heavy defeat against Collingwood in the opening round before bouncing back to beat Richmond. Hinkley acknowledged that significant work lies ahead for the team. “Our current form is not at the level we need. We managed one solid performance against a youthful Richmond side, but we must accelerate our improvement,” he stated.
As the season progresses, the pressure is on both the players and the coaching staff to turn around the club’s fortunes, with aspirations of becoming a competitive side once again.
