Authorities have confirmed a case of the highly pathogenic H7N8 strain of avian influenza at a property in Euroa, approximately 164 kilometres from Melbourne. This detection was anticipated, and urgent testing is ongoing to evaluate potential further spread. The outbreak, while the same strain detected previously in New South Wales and the ACT, is a separate incident from the extensive H5N1 outbreak in south-western Victoria last year that resulted in the culling of 1.3 million birds.
Dr. Cameron Bell, Acting Chief Veterinary Officer, noted that the property was identified as a high-priority site based on known connections, prompting immediate testing. Control measures have been enacted, restricting movement of birds and related products within quarantined areas that encompass Euroa and its surroundings.
Farmers with over 50 poultry in the restricted zone must now keep their birds housed. This outbreak has prompted Coles to maintain egg purchase limits for an indefinite period. Authorities are advising poultry owners across Victoria to remain vigilant as the situation evolves.
