Senior Constable Kelly Ann Foster has been posthumously awarded a bravery medal, four years following her tragic passing in a whirlpool incident in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.

Foster, aged 39, was off duty on 2 January 2021 in Mount Wilson when she attempted to rescue a 24-year-old woman who had been swept into a whirlpool in Wollangambe Canyon. Unfortunately, both Foster and the woman lost their lives during the rescue effort.

Having dedicated over ten years to her role as a police officer, Foster joined the force in 2010 and served within the Chifley Police District at Lithgow Police Station.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM praised Foster’s outstanding bravery and the profound impact she has left behind. “Kelly epitomised what it meant to be a police officer,” Webb stated, highlighting her commitment to the values of professionalism, honour, and courage. She noted that Foster was passionate about her work and devoted herself tirelessly to serving her community.

The Australian Bravery Decorations, recognising acts of courage and community service, are awarded by the Governor-General.
