A recent outbreak of Hepatitis A in Europe has prompted health officials to recommend vaccinations for Australian travellers heading to the continent. Confirmed cases have been reported in countries including Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany, predominantly affecting individuals in poor sanitation conditions, people who inject drugs, and those experiencing homelessness. However, health authorities warn that the virus can affect anyone, making vaccination crucial for all travellers.

Currently, thousands of cases have emerged, with 87 confirmed in Austria, including three fatalities. Czechia has noted approximately 600 cases, with the highest incidence among children aged one to nine, and adults between 24 and 44. The outbreak has also led to six deaths in this country. Meanwhile, Hungary has confirmed 530 cases, mostly among adults, with no reported fatalities.

Slovakia has experienced a significant increase in cases since late 2022, tallying around 850 cases, roughly 60% affecting men and nearly half linked to the Roma community. In Germany, a low number of cases—three in total—has been identified, all involving individuals with drug use histories, with no fatalities reported.

Tourists should be particularly mindful of their health risks based on age demographics. Individuals under 40 face moderate risks, whereas those over 40, especially with existing liver conditions, see an increased risk level. In general, the risk for the broader population across these nations has been deemed low to moderate.

In summary, the ongoing Hepatitis A outbreak in Europe signifies a pressing health concern for Australian travellers, underscoring the importance of vaccination prior to undertaking travel to affected regions.
