Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports globally, has announced a complete shutdown for today due to a significant power outage stemming from a large fire at a nearby electrical substation in Hayes, west London. Authorities have advised passengers to refrain from travelling to the airport, emphasizing safety concerns. The closure is expected to last until 23:59 GMT on 21 March, which converts to 11:00 AEDT on Saturday.

The London Fire Brigade reported that the fire began in a transformer at the substation. Efforts to combat the blaze involved ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters, who have been working throughout the night. As a precaution, around 150 individuals were evacuated from the area, and a 200-meter cordon has been established by authorities. Firefighters have successfully led 29 residents from surrounding buildings to safety.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at approximately 23:23 GMT on Thursday. While crews remain on-site tackling the situation, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Video footage circulating on social media has captured large flames and smoke billowing into the sky, prompting authorities to advise the public to avoid the vicinity as morning disruptions are likely to intensify.

Moreover, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks confirmed a “widespread power cut” affecting over 16,000 homes in Hayes, Hounslow, and adjacent areas near Heathrow. The impacted families are experiencing significant inconveniences alongside the airport’s closure.

Passengers planning to travel through Heathrow are strongly encouraged to stay updated with their airlines for further information, as many flights will undoubtedly be affected by the ongoing outage.
