Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans paid a heartfelt tribute to Luis Enrique’s late daughter, Xana, following the club’s first-ever Champions League victory. Xana sadly passed away at just nine years old in 2019 after a five-month battle with a rare bone cancer. Her father, Enrique, previously celebrated a Champions League title with Barcelona in 2015, where Xana famously planted the club’s flag on the Berlin pitch.
During PSG’s thrilling 5-0 win, Enrique donned a black t-shirt showing a cherished moment with his daughter. After the match, fans unveiled a banner depicting Enrique planting a PSG flag alongside Xana. He reflected on this poignant gesture, expressing his desire to recreate that moment with a PSG flag, acknowledging that while she was not physically present, her spirit remained ever strong in his heart.
Stan Sport host Adam Peacock was visibly moved by the tribute, recalling Enrique’s strong ties to Australia, where he spent time after his playing career. Celebrated goalkeeper Mark Bosnich also praised Enrique’s resilience in overcoming personal tragedy while guiding PSG to their second Champions League final.
Enrique has often spoken about the deep connection he feels with Xana, stating, “Her body is gone but she hasn’t died.” He emphasised that while she may not be physically with them, her spirit lives on through their memories and conversations.
With this triumph, Enrique joined the ranks of legendary managers to win the Champions League with two different teams, alongside notable figures like Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola. He further led PSG to an impressive treble, adding the Champions League to their Ligue 1 and French Cup titles. Looking ahead, Enrique declared his ambitious aim to continue dominating the football world, proudly stating, “It’s in the bag, it’s coming home with us to Paris tomorrow.”
This victory signifies not just a milestone for the club but also a poignant reminder of love and remembrance, showcasing the emotional connections that bind them even in victory.
