Captain Michele Bartolomei, who commanded the Diamond Princess cruise ship, has tragically passed away during a 19-night voyage through Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China. The announcement of his sudden death was communicated through a letter placed in passengers’ cabins, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the captain, who succumbed to a medical emergency onboard.
The letter hailed Bartolomei as a respected leader with nearly three decades of maritime experience. It extended heartfelt condolences to his family during this challenging time. Passengers reported being alerted in the early hours by calls for medical assistance, with further announcements regarding the unfortunate news made over the ship’s public address system.
Following his death, Captain Salvatore Macera is set to take command of the ship with the support of an experienced bridge team. Bartolomei had been expected to celebrate 30 years with the company, boasting a storied career that included extensive time in Alaska and ownership of a fishing boat. He was also known for his studies at nautical schools in Italy and had been living in Canada.
Tributes from friends and passengers have poured in, with one cruiser remarking that Bartolomei was not just a legendary figure at sea but also a personal friend. Another lamented the loss, noting he would be greatly missed. Princess Cruises has yet to comment on the situation.
