A tragic incident unfolded in Sydney when a one-year-old girl was discovered unresponsive inside a parked car at a childcare centre, believed to have been left there for an extended period on a sweltering day reaching 30 degrees Celsius. Emergency services were alerted around 5:35 PM and despite paramedics’ efforts to revive the child, she could not be saved, prompting police to label the situation an “absolute tragedy.”

Authorities stated that the infant’s prolonged confinement in the vehicle on such a hot day could have fatal consequences. The car’s owner, reportedly related to the child, was taken to hospital in shock and will speak with police when able. The girl’s mother is also assisting in the investigation.

Burwood police area commander Superintendent Christine McDonald expressed the devastating impact of the event, noting that it resonated deeply within the community. She conveyed her empathy, stating that nobody could fathom the grief the family must be experiencing. Emergency services are extending support as the community grapples with the aftermath of the incident. Police are currently investigating the timeline leading up to this heart-wrenching event, as much of New South Wales is experiencing a heatwave, with ongoing warnings about extreme temperatures.
