Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of ending their lengthy trophy drought were dashed after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final’s second leg at Anfield. Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, Spurs viewed the cup as a chance to salvage their disappointing season. Following a 1-0 win in the first leg, Tottenham only needed a draw but were outclassed by Liverpool.

Manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his disappointment, stating, “We had a great opportunity and unfortunately we didn’t grab it.” The loss was compounded by an injury to star striker Richarlison before half-time. Despite a promising start, the team lost control, allowing Liverpool to dominate the second half, scoring three goals after entering half-time at 1-0.

Liverpool’s relentless attack began to pay off when Cody Gakpo scored the opener in the 34th minute, followed by Mohamed Salah converting a penalty. Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk later added to Spurs’ woes, sealing a 4-0 victory. Postecoglou acknowledged Liverpool’s superiority, noting that his side lacked the aggression needed to compete effectively.

With this exit from the Carabao Cup, Tottenham now shifts focus to their FA Cup match against Aston Villa, hoping to improve their fortunes.
