Western Australia’s Health Minister, Amber-Jade Sanderson, has accused Liberal leader Libby Mettam of spreading “misinformation” that is instilling undue fear among parents about the government’s proposal for a new women and babies hospital. The proposed site for this facility at Fiona Stanley, located approximately 20 kilometres from Perth Children’s Hospital, has become a focal point of contention, with critics asserting that the distance could endanger newborns’ lives and increase disability risks. Concerned parents, including Angela Courtney, whose premature baby faced serious challenges, are urging the government to rethink the hospital’s location. Mettam declared that the current plan poses unnecessary risks to vulnerable infants. Meanwhile, the Australian Medical Association WA has also emphasised the dangers of transporting unstable patients over long distances. Sanderson has acknowledged the concerns raised and stated that consultations with medical professionals are ongoing, but she has delayed any decisions on the matter until after the upcoming election. The situation highlights the tension between the government’s plans and community apprehensions surrounding maternal and infant healthcare access.
