Health authorities in Sydney have issued a warning for residents to be vigilant for measles symptoms after a confirmed case visited several popular locations in the city. The infected individual recently returned from Southeast Asia, which is currently experiencing outbreaks in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

While these sites do not pose an ongoing risk, visitors who were present during specific times are advised to monitor for symptoms. Notable locations include Westfield Eastgardens, Myer, the Queen Victoria Building, and several cafes between 1pm and 6.30pm on various dates.

Dr Christine Selvey from NSW Health noted that symptoms might develop between seven to eighteen days post-exposure, typically beginning with fever, runny nose, and cough, followed by a rash. She emphasised the importance of contacting medical professionals rather than waiting in a clinic if symptoms appear, to avoid potential virus exposure to others.

This situation highlights the necessity for individuals to verify their measles vaccination status, especially given the disease’s high contagion rate. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is available at no cost in New South Wales for children aged 12 and 18 months, as well as for anyone born after 1966 who has not received two doses. NSW Health encourages anyone uncertain about their vaccination status to seek the vaccine, affirming that additional doses are safe.
